Hebrews 4:3, 9-11

“For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said, As I swore in my wrath, They shall not enter my rest…So then there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.”

Revelation 14:13

“And I heard a voice from heaven saying, Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’ Blessed indeed, says the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors for their deeds follow them!’”

Context:

Heavenly rest is the goal of human existence. The book of Hebrews warns readers “let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it (the promise of entering his rest)” (Hebrews 4:1). The failure of many Israelites to believe the Lord, to cling persistently to his promises, resulted in their disobedience, rebellion, and sin (Hebrews 3:16-19). Faith in God’s promises is the way to enter into this heavenly rest. God rested on the seventh day. Israel’s entry into the Promised Land was  a major step towards God’s people entering eternal rest. However, the ultimate fulfilment of entering Christ’s rest will occur when Jesus returns to earth as Lord of Lords.

Questions for Reflection:

  1. Is it contradictory to say “strive to enter that rest”?
  2. How does the assurance of eternal rest after death help you in this life now?
  3. Is it easier to rest if you are naturally a reflective, quiet person, than if you are temperamentally more out-going, active, and demonstrative or exhibit some other personality traits?

Prayer Pointers:

  • Ask the Lord to strengthen your belief in his promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ
  • Invite the Holy Spirit to pinpoint areas in your life that are not yet surrendered to Him
  • Invite the Holy Spirit to speak to you today through Scripture, through creation, and through other people. Take note of what you learn!
