Psalm 131
My heart is not proud, O LORD,
My eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me.
But I have stilled and quieted my soul;
Like a weaned child with its mother,
Like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, put your hope in the LORD
Both now and forevermore.
Context:
This simple yet profound prayer expresses David’s quiet confidence in the Lord. While
fleeing for his life from King Saul, David waited for God’s timing and didn’t try to
vindicate himself. He couldn’t have prayed this during his sin with Bathsheba (2 Samuel
11-12). Jesus could experience this type of intimacy with his Father and encounter a joy
and deep trust even in times of danger and adversity (Matthew 26:36-46).
Questions for Reflection:
1. How does David deny pride in his life from this Psalm?
2. How can an unweaned child be calm?
3. How does this intimate, personal, portrayal become a collective, corporate,
experience for the nation of Israel?
4. How might personal trust, calm, and confidence in your life spill over into the wider
Restoration Fellowship community?

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open all desires known, and from whom no
secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy

souls today as we reflect on your Holy Word and prepare us to meet with you; through
Christ our Lord. Amen. [Source: Adapted from the Book of Common Prayer]
