My parents immigrated from Hong Kong, determined that their children would remain “Chinese” even as we grew up in the U.S. So when Paul writes in Philippians that we are “citizens of heaven” (3:20), it resonates deeply—it’s the kind of in-between identity I’ve always known. I came to ministry as a second career after psychiatry, and living at the intersection of those two fields has been rich—helping me explore how science and faith, medicine and theology, can speak to one another. As someone who came to faith later in life, I care deeply about helping those who wrestle with whether belief in God can coexist with science, or who question Christianity’s truth or relevance. For those who already believe, I’m drawn to the question of how to live faithfully and deeply in relationship with God. When not working on my next sermon, I love spending time with my wife and four children, rock climbing, biking, reading, and trying to get back into ballroom dancing.
